British Sign Language Is a Distinct Language
British Sign Language (BSL) is the native or preferred language of many Deaf people in England, Wales and Scotland. It has its own grammar, syntax, spatial structure and vocabulary; it is not signed English, not visually derived from English word order, and not mutually intelligible with Irish Sign Language (ISL) or American Sign Language (ASL). The British Sign Language Act 2022 recognises BSL as a language of England, Wales and Scotland (Scotland has its own BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 predating this). Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers, employers, healthcare providers and public bodies have a duty to make reasonable adjustments; booking a qualified BSL interpreter is the standard adjustment for BSL users.
Signed Supported English (SSE) uses BSL vocabulary in English word order and is a different service; some Deaf users prefer SSE for specific contexts. International Sign is a pidgin used at international events and is not equivalent to BSL. If the booking is Deafblind, hands-on or visual-frame interpreting may apply; mention it at booking so we can match the specialism.
Pricing
BSL interpreting priced per session by setting, duration and whether a single or team-of-two rota is required.
Team-of-two is the professional standard for any session running over 60 minutes. Longer courtroom, day-long training or conference bookings need earlier lead-time; we typically confirm 5 to 10 working days ahead. Public sector bookings invoiced under standard sterling terms with round-number pricing on a per-organisation basis.
How It Works
Four steps from first enquiry to invoiced session.

What Our Clients Say
Feedback from NHS trusts, HR teams, education providers and legal firms booking BSL interpreters across the UK.
"Booked a BSL interpreter for a Deaf patient's mental health assessment. NRCPD-registered, arrived early, handled positioning without prompting, kept to the clinician's pacing. Recommended the same interpreter for follow-up two weeks later. Exactly the continuity we wanted."
NHS mental health team, South London
"HR grievance hearing with a Deaf employee, team-of-two BSL interpreters for a full afternoon. Rotated every 15 to 20 minutes without disrupting the flow. The employee said afterwards they felt heard properly for the first time in a workplace process. Access to Work paperwork was handled cleanly."
HR Manager, NHS Trust, Manchester
"Full-day training conference, two BSL interpreters, 90 attendees. Positioning worked well with the streamed AV feed. Interpreters coordinated with the venue tech team beforehand and it all just worked."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BSL interpreter and when do I need one?
A British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter mediates between BSL and spoken or written English in live settings: meetings, medical appointments, court hearings, workplace conversations, training sessions and public events. Book a BSL interpreter whenever a Deaf BSL user needs equal access to a live spoken exchange. Under the Equality Act 2010, employers, service providers, healthcare providers and public bodies have a duty to make reasonable adjustments; booking a qualified BSL interpreter is the standard adjustment.
Are your BSL interpreters registered?
Yes. We arrange BSL interpreters registered on the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD), which holds the RSLI (Registered Sign Language Interpreter) status, or equivalent recognised registration. Registration confirms the interpreter has met the training, assessment and continuing professional development standards required to interpret between BSL and English in professional settings.
How is BSL different from signed English or International Sign?
BSL is a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax, spatial structure and vocabulary; it is not signed English, and it is not visually derived from English word order. Signed Supported English (SSE) uses BSL vocabulary in English word order and is a separate service. International Sign is a pidgin used at international events and is not equivalent to BSL. American Sign Language (ASL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) are separate languages: ISL specifically is not mutually intelligible with BSL despite the geographic proximity.
How much does a BSL interpreter cost in the UK?
BSL interpreting starts at £70 per hour with a 2-hour minimum for scheduled bookings. Half-day (up to 4 hours) is quoted from £250; full-day (up to 8 hours) from £450. Specialist settings (legal, mental health, medical safeguarding, high-stakes workplace) are quoted per session. Meetings running over 60 minutes typically require two interpreters rotating every 15 to 20 minutes as a professional standard, quoted accordingly.
Why do longer meetings need two BSL interpreters?
Sustained sign language interpreting is physically and cognitively demanding. Professional practice is that meetings running over 60 minutes are covered by two interpreters working in rotation, typically swapping every 15 to 20 minutes to maintain accuracy, watch for terminology drift, and prevent repetitive strain injury (RSI). The team-of-two model is standard for conferences, day-long training, court hearings, extended medical consultations and full-day workplace meetings. Both interpreters attend the whole session; the resting interpreter monitors for corrections and prepares upcoming content.
Can a BSL interpreter attend NHS and mental health appointments?
Yes. BSL interpreters cover NHS Trust hospitals, GP surgeries, outpatient clinics, A&E, maternity, mental health services (CAMHS and adult community mental health) and specialist clinics. NHS work follows the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) and Caldicott Principles on patient-identifiable information. Mental health assessments typically require interpreter continuity across sessions; we recommend booking the same interpreter for follow-ups where possible.
Do you cover BSL for UK courts and tribunals?
Yes. BSL interpreters cover Magistrates' Court, Crown Court, County Court, Family Court, First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber), Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal. HMCTS Judicial Guidance on remote hearings applies for video-linked sessions. Court BSL work uses the team-of-two model as standard given hearing length. Legal Aid Agency bookings invoiced under the applicable rate framework.
Can you provide BSL interpreting over video?
Yes. Video is a workable channel for BSL interpreting via Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or NHS trust video systems. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) suits short scheduled sessions, follow-up appointments, and geographically dispersed meetings. For safeguarding-critical, mental health or legal contexts we recommend on-site attendance where practical: the interpreter can read the room, adjust position for line-of-sight, and manage turn-taking directly.
