Documents Requiring Translation for the Skilled Worker Route

The Skilled Worker route (Appendix Skilled Worker) requires proof of a qualifying job offer at or above the relevant skill level and salary threshold, a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, and the personal evidence that supports the applicant's identity, qualifications and English-language ability. Where any supporting document is issued in a language other than English or Welsh, UKVI requires a certified translation. Common translated items:

• Employment references and previous contracts confirming the roles, dates and duties relied on for continuous experience where the SOC code requires it.
• Police clearance certificates from every country of residence for 12 months or more in the last 10 years, where the role sits in the regulated professions listed at Appendix Skilled Worker Annex 2.

• English-language qualification evidence where relied on in lieu of a SELT (majority-English-taught degree letters, national-of qualifications lists).

Why UKVI Refuses Skilled Worker Applications on Translation Issues

Skilled Worker refusals under Paragraph SW 8.1 and SW 14 typically cite documentary shortfalls rather than eligibility ones. Where a translation is the weak link, the caseworker records it against the specific rule the untranslated document was meant to satisfy. Patterns we see repeatedly on refusal notices:

• Transcript translations that omit grade tables or ECTS credit lines. ENIC uses the credit and grade grid to determine equivalence; without it, the Statement of Comparability cannot be issued and the SOC skill-level check fails.
• Professional-body registrations that translate the licence number but not the scope of practice or the validity period. The GMC and NMC read the scope line to confirm the overseas regulator's coverage matches the UK sponsor role.
• Employment references translated as a summary. The reference must be a full rendering of the original, including the letterhead, the signatory's name and title, and any HR reference number.
