Documents Requiring Translation for the UK Student Route
Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules requires proof of an unconditional offer with a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), the academic qualifications the sponsor institution has accepted, financial evidence to cover course fees and maintenance, and, where relevant, an ATAS certificate. Where any document is issued in a language other than English or Welsh, UKVI requires a certified translation on the Para 39B standard. Typical evidence includes:
- Academic transcripts and grade sheets supporting the qualification the sponsor listed on the CAS. The transcript must be translated in the source's row-and-column layout, with grades in the source scale, credit or ECTS values preserved.
- Degree certificates, A-level equivalents and secondary school leaving certificates. Awarding institution, title of the qualification and any classification band must appear in English exactly as they appear on the source.
- ENIC Statements of Comparability or Statements of Equivalence where the applicant is holding the recognition document in their home-country language.
- Bank statements (28 consecutive days) demonstrating maintenance funds under Appendix Finance. Running balance, salary credits and any large transactions must be readable in English on every page.
- Financial sponsor letters: parental, institutional or government sponsor documents, including a statement of undertaking where the sponsor is a national or regional government.
- Age evidence: birth certificate where the applicant is aged under 18 or the sponsor is applying for a Child Student route.
- Consent letters from a parent or guardian for under-18 applicants, translated in full including the signature block.
- Police clearance certificates where a course is over six months and the applicant has lived in restricted-list countries.
Why UKVI Refuses Student Applications on Translation Issues
Student Route refusals under Paragraph ST 8.1 and Paragraph FIN typically cite maintenance-funds shortfalls or qualification-evidence shortfalls. Where the translation is the weak link, the caseworker records the refusal against the specific rule the untranslated document was meant to satisfy. Common translation-side reasons on refusal notices:
- Transcripts translated as summaries. The transcript is the document ENIC and the sponsor institution read back against; a paraphrased grade average is not the same evidence as the row-and-column grid.
- Untranslated pages in a 28-day bank statement. UKVI treats an untranslated page as unavailable evidence; a broken 28-day run resets the finance clock.
- Currency figures converted unilaterally. We keep the source figure and add an English gloss, never a converted number that could later be disputed at a different rate.
- Financial sponsor letters translated without the signatory's block. The letterhead, the signatory's name and title, and any HR or ministry reference number all carry evidentially and must appear on the translation.
- Consent letters and parental documents translated without the signature block. For under-18 applicants, an unsigned consent-letter translation is not evidence of consent.
Para 39B Requirements Met as Standard
Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules sets the four elements a Home Office caseworker checks on any foreign-language document. Every Student Route translation we issue carries all four on the same page as the translated text:
- Statement of accuracy from the translator confirming the translation is complete and accurate.
- Date of translation so the caseworker can see the pack is current, well within the 31-day finance window.
- Translator's full name and signature, not the agency's trading name alone.
- Translator's contact details and professional affiliation for Home Office verification.
Notarisation is not required for the Student Route and does not strengthen the application. The Home Office asks for a certified translation; anything above that is administrative overhead and slows the pack down for no evidential benefit.
Format Matching for ENIC and Sponsor Institutions
For qualification recognition, the layout of the translated transcript needs to match the source line-for-line: subject columns, credit or ECTS values, grades in the source grading scale, weekly hours and any classification band. ENIC assessors read across from the source to the translation; a reflowed prose version delays or refuses the Statement of Comparability. For the CAS-issuing institution, admissions offices work off the transcript the sponsor listed on the CAS statement; format matching is what keeps admissions checks routine. Where the source uses a national qualification framework level (EQF, NQF, ISCED), we retain the source level notation and add an English gloss rather than converting the level unilaterally.

Frequently Asked Questions
What documents need certified translation for a UK student visa?
Academic transcripts and grade sheets, degree certificates or A-level equivalents, ENIC Statements of Comparability, bank statements showing 28 consecutive days of maintenance funds, financial sponsor letters, birth certificate for under-18 applicants, parental consent letters, and police certificates for restricted-list residence.
How much does student visa translation cost?
£39.99 per page for standard delivery, fixed price with no hidden fees. A typical Student Route pack of a transcript, a degree certificate and a bank-statement summary runs from £200 to £360 depending on document length. Handwriting adds £5 per page and a posted hard copy is £10 flat.
How quickly can I get student visa documents translated?
Standard delivery is 24 hours for 1 to 3 pages, 36 hours for 4 to 6 pages, and 48 hours for 7 to 10 pages. Urgent sub-24h delivery is available on request where a CAS-driven course start date is fixed.
Is notarisation required for a UK student visa?
No. Paragraph 39B certified translation with a Statement of Accuracy, translation date, translator name and signature, and translator contact details is the Home Office standard. Notarisation is not required by UKVI or by ENIC and does not strengthen the application.
Will ENIC accept your translated transcript for a Statement of Comparability?
Yes. We translate transcripts in the source's row-and-column layout, with grades in the source grading scale, ECTS or credit values preserved, and module titles rendered faithfully. ENIC reads the translation back against the source; format matching is what makes the Comparability process routine.
Do I need to translate every page of my 28-day bank statement?
Yes. UKVI treats an untranslated page as unavailable evidence, and a broken 28-day run resets the finance clock under Appendix Finance. Every page in the requested set must be translated, with the running balance and any large transactions all readable in English.
How are currency figures handled on the translation?
The source currency figure is preserved and an English gloss is added alongside. We do not convert figures unilaterally, because a converted number can later be disputed at a different rate and can weaken the maintenance-funds evidence rather than strengthen it.
My parents wrote a consent letter for me — do you translate the signature block too?
Yes. Consent letters for under-18 applicants are translated in full, including both parents' names, signatures and the date. An unsigned or partially translated consent letter is not accepted as evidence of consent by the sponsor institution or by UKVI.
