Documents Requiring Translation for a UK Spouse Visa

Appendix FM partner-route applications (FLR(M), further leave to remain, and eventually SET(M) settlement) require evidence of a genuine and subsisting relationship, of the applicant's and sponsor's identities and status, and of financial requirement compliance. Where any document is issued in a language other than English or Welsh, UKVI requires a certified translation. Typical evidence includes:

• Marriage certificate where the ceremony was overseas or where the certificate is otherwise not in English. Both spouses' details, the officiant, the venue and any Apostille or legalisation stamp must be preserved.
• Civil partnership certificate where the couple registered a civil partnership outside the UK.
• Birth certificates of any dependent children being included on the spouse application, showing both parents' details.
• Prior divorce decrees or annulment orders for either party where a previous marriage needs to be shown as dissolved before the current relationship can qualify.
• Financial documents where the sponsor's income relies on overseas payslips, self-employment tax returns or bank statements, or where the applicant's savings support the maintenance test.
• Sponsor's employment or contract documents issued in another language, including a spouse's overseas letter of employment before UK relocation.
• Police certificates from any country the applicant has lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years, where relevant to the application.
• Change-of-name deeds, adoption records or dowry-related declarations where they carry evidentially on the couple's relationship history.

Why UKVI Refuses Spouse Applications on Translation Issues

Appendix FM partner-route refusals under Paragraph EX and Paragraph GEN typically cite either evidential shortfalls or credibility concerns. Where the translation weakens the evidential pack, the caseworker records the refusal against the specific rule the untranslated document was meant to satisfy. Common translation-side reasons on refusal notices:

• Marriage certificates translated without the Apostille or legalisation stamp. UKVI treats the legalisation block as the certificate's authenticity marker; if it is not translated, the certificate is not considered proved.
• Divorce decrees translated as a summary. The decree absolute or dissolution order is a specific paragraph; a summary of the effect is not enough. The caseworker reads for the operative wording and the effective date.
• Untranslated marginal notes on birth or marriage certificates. A note recording a re-registration or a name-change is often the single most important line on a foreign civil certificate.
• Name-transliteration inconsistencies across the pack: the marriage certificate, the birth certificates, the passport and the sponsor's documents must transliterate the same way on every document.
• Partial translation of financial documents. Overseas payslips must be translated in full including gross, net, tax and pension lines; a summary line stating an average salary is not evidence for the Appendix FM financial requirement.

Para 39B Requirements Met as Standard

Paragraph 39B of the Immigration Rules sets the four elements a Home Office caseworker checks on any foreign-language document. Every partner-route translation we issue carries all four on the same page as the translated text:

Foreign Divorce Recognition in England and Wales
