Documents Requiring Translation for a UK Family Visa

Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules sets the evidence framework for family life applications: parent, child, adult dependent relative and partner routes. Where any supporting document is issued in a language other than English or Welsh, UKVI requires a certified translation on the Para 39B standard. Typical evidence includes:

• Birth certificates establishing the family relationship: parent to child, siblings, or grandparent to grandchild for adult dependent relative applications. Both parents' names on the certificate carry the relationship evidence and must be preserved.

• Death certificates of a deceased parent where the surviving-parent-and-child application relies on that history.
• Previous divorce decrees for either the applicant or the sponsor where a prior marriage needs to be shown as dissolved.

Why UKVI Refuses Family Visa Applications on Translation Issues

Family route refusals under Appendix FM often cite evidential shortfalls rather than eligibility ones. Where the underlying facts support the application but the translation does not present them cleanly, the caseworker records the refusal against the specific eligibility clause the untranslated document was meant to satisfy. Common translation-side reasons on refusal notices:

• Selective translation of a birth certificate: applicants who translate only the child's section and omit both parents' details will fail the relationship-evidence check even when the underlying certificate is genuine.
• Untranslated stamps and marginal notes on civil documents: a marginal note recording a legitimation, an adoption or a re-registration is often the single most important line on a foreign civil certificate.

• Financial documents translated as summaries: the sponsor's payslips must be translated in full with gross, net, tax and pension lines all visible. A summary line stating an average salary is not evidence.
• Foreign court orders translated without the ordering paragraph: the ratio of a custody or parental-responsibility order is the paragraph the caseworker reads for sole responsibility; skipping it fails the FM child-route test.
